Vehicle-related measures increase road safety and have an effect on the occurrence of accidents. EU road fatalities have been halved from their 2001 figure, in part as a result of the improvements in vehicle technology. The EU Commission’s objective is to have next to no more traffic fatalities on Europe‘s roads by 2050. To achieve this goal, the focus needs to be on not only driver assistance systems but also, increasingly, the next levels of automated driving systems. Challenges are related to among others: the development of legal framework as well as education of road users.
